Both “railroad” and “railway” have been used in company names for that form of transportation in the US. IOW, it’s not a cultural absolute in the way of the spelling of “labor” vs. “labour.”

American companies probably use the term “railway” in their names because it is a broader term that covers street cars, subways, monorails, etc. In Britain, I don’t believe the term “railroad” is used at all.
