It took a lot of link-following to finally find the location of the film. You can find it
here.
It truly is a wonderful film and deserving of awards for the way it tells the wonder of free markets and free men.

But were they lead to choose the movie, or was it just a pointed gesture?

Although the Left can certainly point to it and deceptively say, “See? King Obama TOLD you ‘You didn’t do that by yourself!’”... but hopefully the main point any LIV might take from it is that no one person, or board, or government, could ever make all those millions of decisions that are required to make that pencil. They can only get in the way. Nothing more, nothing less.

Here is Leonard E. Read's
original essay. Fascinating reading.
This should be required reading by every student suffering through the Common Core curriculum.

Dyn-O-Mite Video, very charming.
Written by Leonard Read, 1958.
Often cited by Milton Friedman.
Now beautifully illustrated by The Competitive Enterprise Institute.
