I’m guessing that they must have a tab/sleeve or some mechanical feature that retains the nut to the wheel but allows it to spin on. Definitely one less thing to jockey when changing the tires.

Yes in Indycar and Nas the tire guys have a spare(s) on their tool belt.

I prefer the entire Nascar pit regulations because it makes things more difficult, puts more emphasis on the crew skill.

No, the nut comes off with the socket. It is locked on the spindle with the tabs shown in this pic.

and should stay in the socket as it comes off and is reused with new set of shoes. The socket pushes over the 2 Tabs and allows the nut to come off the spindle. Then upon reinstalling the nut the Tabs are collapsed as the nut/socket go on the spindle and pop back out as the socket comes off the spindle.

The nut does should not stay with the wheel assy.

IIRC they used to have a spare nut on the Tyre Changer. I'm taking a guess that has changed.
