MiniSloth does it again. More info and patch links at the site (along with at least 14 adlinks) but this is not news that will gladden anyone attempting to use the Monolithic Shibboleth of an operating system. Users must get Windows 8.1 Update if they want security patches...

Was this post mis-quoting the operating system?
The article says 8.1 support is ending.
Does that mean 8.0 support?

Windows 8 support continues.
Windows 8.1 support continues if you keep installing upgrades as they are available. So far the upgrades are free, I don’t know if that will change.

Why don’t they just cover all the bases and say “Microsoft is ending support for Microsoft products.”

So the original post means what?
Is it bogus?

What they mean is Windows 8.2 support is beginning.

The point of the article, if I understand it correctly, is that "Windows 8.1" will not be patched, and that users must get "Windows 8.1
Update" if they want security patches.
However... Microsoft itself yanked Windows 8.1 Update from the corporate WSUS update server chute almost a week ago and still hasn't offered a replacement.

They are replacing 8.1 with 8.1 Update. Why they couldn’t have called it 8.2 or 8.1.1 or 8.1.0.0.0.0.1 instead of 8.1 Update I have no idea. I guess soon we’ll just pretend that the original 8.1 never existed.

I ran into this little gem last evening while locking down a couple of new server builds. Yes, the appearance of the desktop includes a search button if you have the update and does not if you do not. My partner and I were scratching our heads over where the difference came from because these were nominally identical servers.
Don't know about the revocation of security patches - seems like an awfully abrupt way to handle this. At some point Microsoft is going to run out of feet to shoot.
To: Cringing Negativism Network
You have to UPDATE 8.1 to 8.1 Update 1 to continue to getting patches.
This is a monumentally poorly-written communication. They are forcing 8.1 users to go to Update 1 to continue patching. This is most likely a security update that is irreversible.

Much angst about nothing, here. This Windows 8.1 Update is just marketing speak for the first service pack for 8.1. Microsoft must have thought that “Windows 8.1 Service Pack 1” sounded weird.
As far as not updating the 8.1 further, realize that Microsoft did exactly the same thing for XP. A while after Service Pack 1 for XP came out, they quit patching the base XP and all the new patches were targeted at SP1. Same for XP SP2 and XP SP3 as time went by.

In the comments, someone posted this.
“What an poorly written FUD article straight out of Monty Python. This is coming from a Linux enthusiast too. I suppose if you don’t call it “Service Pack 8.1” then it doesn’t count? All standard procedure from past Windows revisions and updates.Pure click bait.”

Mistake number one is looking at the tech press as if they are any less biased, and frankly less stupid, as the regular media.

True. MS is basically trying to gloss over the fact that so much of the base code for 8.1 is demanding so many patches that they had to rewrite it, but rather than calling it something like Windows 8.4 or something they decided to call it Windows 8.1 "Update". But the 8.1 Update is not accessible at their main site which is causing some problems.
It is not a COMPLETE rewrite of the base code, but it is substantial enough that you are looking at a whole new install rather than a security patch suite a la XP-SP3.
