I always thought anything bigger than a large rabbit was too much for a bird of prey.

Too big? I don't think so.
Check out this article on bald eagles. From the article:
A bald eagle's lifting power is about 4 pounds.
Last time I checked, my cat weighs about 13 pounds. I think most of them are at least 11 or 12 pounds - far outside of the lifting capability of a bald eagle.
