ORLAND (CBSLA.com) A couple in a car that got caught up in the deadly tour bus crash in Orland Thursday said it was like being in a terrifying 3D movie.
Bonnie Duran and her husband, Joe, were in a Nissan Altima that was clipped by a FedEx big rig just before it slammed into a tour bus, killing nine people. The bus and truck drivers were also killed.
I looked over and saw the FedEx truck coming straight for me. He was in flames already, Duran said. I just started going this way, and he clipped the back end of me and went on to hit the bus.
KCAL9s Tom Wait reported that the impact sent the couple into a gully near the side of the road.
It was like a 3D movie. Imagine a Mack truck coming out of a movie, unbelievable. We didnt even have time to react. She did a great job, Joe said.
It was so scary, we were wondering if anyone was going to get out of there alive, Duran said.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
Wow... Sex with each other is like a porno clip they downloaded of the internets.
What a horrible, terrifying accident. My condolences to all concerned.
It is very interesting they say the truck was already on fire. This was before impact with the bus, correct? Or maybe they are just confused about what they saw. That one picture that is out there is heart stopping, I’ve never seen anything like it. It is amazing that anyone survived.
What would make a truck catch on fire? Could this have been mechanical failure rather than the driver driving like a lunatic? I was very, very surprised to hear it was a Fed Ex truck involved, I would think those guys would be the best of the best.
Wow ... I know it’s almost 9:30 in the morning back there but even in Jersey that’s a bit early to start drinking.
What in the world does that even mean??
Don’t forget your meds this morning.
Surprised by this

Nice self portrait on your page. Is the guy in red your boyfriend?
That part about the fire really makes you sit up and take notice. My first thought was something in the packages; some kind of hazardous material that shouldn’t have been shipped this way.
It was a double load set up which are dangerous and sway non stop if you’re been stuck behind them on the road.
The Ca I-5 is very dangerous design and needs to be widening and a dividing wall .
I read this truck design causes heat to build in the back tires.
LOL! Actually, I found that funny, but I am thinking this thread won’t be getting too many people thinking of the inappropriateness of that “3D movie” comment.
I, too, find it bizarre that people are apparently now equating horrific, real-life circumstances they experience as if it was just a scene in a movie.
So what does “He was in flames already” mean? Was it the tractor that was in flames? Was it one of the trailers that was in flames? Was he, the driver personally in flames? This story doesn’t contribute enough information to determine anything other than the couple noted something was in flames, but it does give us a bit more to consider as something was ablaze PRIOR to the awful collision that killed so many including that driver.
Prayers for all involved, and their families.
“What would make a truck catch on fire? Could this have been mechanical failure rather than the driver driving like a lunatic?”
I doubt the driver was driving like a “lunatic”. It is possible he was dead at that point. AS to your fire question the new emission systems on trucks can generate some high heat. That is also a possibility.
Something in his load for delivery? Run-a-way Battery perhaps? Pray for the families involved.
He also could have had a stroke or heart attack.
???????????????????????????????
If the FedEx tractor-trailer jumped the median as some have reported there are numerous things that could have caused flames, both before and after. If it was a diesel engine, flames are less likely but not impossible from a fuel line or tank rupture. Brakes? I’ve seen those catch fire on trucks headed down a long steep incline. Flammable material inside the cab igniting? Something in the cargo? Sounds as if the road was fairly well traveled. There will be other witnesses.
Stating that actual, 3D reality was like a 3D movie sounded strange and the poster was pointing out the strangeness of it.
Yes, exactly. The cab? The trailer? They'll try to figure out in the investigation.
If the guy was a smoker he may have flicked a butt out the window and had it blow back in.
Somewhere else in the world, it’s 5pm...
When on the highways, I stay well clear of the UPS and other dbl-trailer loads; just seeing that 2nd trailer ‘wagging’ even a little, scares the crap out of me.
