Inside the abandoned shopping centers that were once a beacon of the American Dream
The Daily Mail ^ | 4/10/14 | JESSICA JERREAT

When they were built in the 1970s these two gleaming Ohio malls were symbols of the boom years in the U.S., and their wide walkways were filled with shoppers.

Now the verdant foliage that decorated them has died off and the fountains inside are dry as store after store deserted the out-of-town malls.

In the future, please place sensationalist, tabloid material (which is 90% of the Daily Mail) in chat.

Thanks,

At deadmalls.com, there are references to the racial issues of both of these malls. At any of the malls within a 40-mile or so radius of me, it comes down to racial demographics.

Back when I had a job, I used to like going to the store or mall and buying stuff. Boy I miss having money.

“Looks a tad like detroit!”

Patience! They’re aiming to make it a tad like Nagasaki.

Wellfare checks only go so far.It takes people with real jobs spending money to keep these places vibrant. That wont happen when the hoodrats invade.

I don’t see how any retail place can survive right now in a mall. Not only does the ‘real’ economy suck, but they can’t possibly compete with online competitors. Their merchandise would already be a higher price than online, and that’s even before they have the high rent to pay, various taxes, and overhead. Just a sad situation really.

Their business models HAVE to be centered around ignorant customers that aren’t aware of the lower online prices. As a shopper, there really isn’t a reason to physically go to these places. The only time I do is if there’s an unusual situation where I may want to LOOK at something in person, before buying it online. In that case, they’re nothing more than a showroom really.

You just know that things aren’t going well when you see what was space formerly occupied by a big ‘anchor’ retail chain at the mall being rented out to a CHURCH! lol

I think it would be neat if they turned one of the closed down malls into a giant paintball or laser tag place. Perhaps an indoor shooting range with gun shops.

Malls are the section 8 housing of the future.

Large parking lots for the tenants to park their Escalades and Lexus SUVs.

When Obama's vast collection of children overran them.

Nobody is taking their family shopping in that environment.
I'll go there if I have to - armed.

Both are in the Cleveland area.
I remember riding my dirt bike on the site of Randall Park Mall back in the late 60s.

lol!!!

Could turn one of the large empty spaces into a grocery store too! They won’t even have to go outdoors to use their FSA Cards! A smaller spot or two could be beer and ABC stores. Maybe convenience stores too, for junkfood and smokes. Could also open a check cashing place or two. It’ll be a one stop shop for all of your FSA needs! They’ll never even need to leave the place!

Most malls seem to do OK until somebody gets the bright idea to run "public" transportation from the inner city to them so underpriveliged "kids" have something to do and a nice place to go. After all, it's only "fair" and giving them opportunity for a "better" life, right?

After the "teens" finally arrive, it is all down hill from there. What decent person wants to shop or hang around a bunch of ferals who hate you and want to turn your nice shopping experience into "their" turf on their terms and terrorize you in the process?
