Fears that a public Catholic baptism ceremony for a Argentinean lesbian couples child would amount to little more than a media stunt to promote the Church's acceptance of homosexuality appear to have been borne out Saturday at the Archdiocese of Cordobas cathedral.
After the celebration of the sacrament, the couple, Karina Villarroel and Soledad Ortiz, kissed while posing for photos with the child, Umma Azul, at the front of the Church.
Villarroel, the non-biological mother, told local press the Catholic Churchs decision to grant the baptism was important because it signifies that there is a real social change and acceptance" following the passage of the country's "marriage equality" law.
The final step, she said, would be to be able to have the church consecrate their (gay) marriage, as right now it is only a civil marriage.
Villarroel also explained that their decision to have Argentinean President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner as godmother was a way of thanking her and ex-President Nestor Kirchner for the law which granted us our rights. Kirchner, who was not present at the ceremony, was instrumental in the passage of same-sex marriage in 2010.
Critics of the archdioceses decision to proceed with the baptism have pointed to the Churchs Code of Canon Law, which says that for an infant to be baptized in the Catholic Church there must be a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion.
The Catechism also clearly states, however, that for the grace of Baptism to unfold, the parents' help is important. So too is the role of the godfather and godmother, who must be firm believers, able and ready to help the newly baptized - child or adult on the road of Christian life.

Uh, people...........its Argentina! From what I’ve been reading, it appears only about 25% of the so-called “Catholics” in Argentina are.....Roman Catholic. Despite its appearance as a monolithic organization, the Roman Catholic Church as guided by “Rome”, has practically no control whatsoever over 50% of the so-called “Catholic” churches in South America. The other 50% are, from what I’ve seen, bizarre wack-job congregations with services that more resemble circus acts than actual Masses. Truly bizarre.
You cannot compromise or appease fascists
They take it as an admission of guilt and weakness and renew their attacks
The child is not the pervert. No reason to punish it.
Withholding the Eucharist isn’t a punishment for sinful behavior. By denying it to a person in a state of mortal sin, the priest is protecting the sinner from committing a sacrilege. In most cases, the priest doesn’t know whether or not someone presenting themselves for communion has confessed and repented. In a high profile case like this one, I would think that he would and would do the right thing.
Well, sometimes that term is used to distinguish between the birth mother and an adoptive mother or a foster mother.
People in Hell want ice water.
I just love how these people think the Church is becoming more open minded and accepting of homosexuality by doing and saying things it has always said. You are loved by God, we all are. You are in serious sin if you act out on homosexuality. So the Church didn’t reject a baby for baptizing? What am I missing here? Baptizing a baby in the church has nothing to do with the serious immorality of the unwed sex partners and their dream to mock marriage and God.
Ping
no, the baby was baptized because it’s not his fault that his parents are living in sin. You can’t take it out on the baby because of the way the parents’ live.
The same goes for those heterosexuals who aren’t married and have children. If that’s going to be the case, then very few children will be baptized.
