Officers said a 13-year-old girl stabbed her 11-year-old sister and 13-year-old friend who were staying the night at a home on the 2600 block of East Orangeburg Avenue about 1 a.m.

The girl then apparently turned the knife on herself, investigators said.

Modesto police said the mother called 911 after hearing the girls screaming.

“My understanding is the mom heard a scream, went to check on them (and) that’s when they found the victims and called police immediately,” said Heather Graves of the Modesto Police Department.

According to officials, the sister and friend are in critical condition, and the girl who is suspected in the stabbings is in serious condition.

“It’s shocking,” said Melinda Cromier who lives nearby. “It’s a great neighborhood.”

Neighbors said they believe the child who was responsible for the stabbings may have special needs, however investigators cannot confirm those claims.

Police said they don’t have a motive for the stabbings.

It is possible that the girl could face attempted murder charges, but Modesto police said they are going to leave that for the Stanislaus County district attorney to decide.

Officers said all three girls are expected to survive.
