Translation: Your risk of total data loss has just doubled. Which may be acceptable for short-term backup purposes, but hardly for archival use. Not for me, then.

I noticed that too. Worst possible configuration for backups. Unless you striped more drives. Cheapest solution is to back up to a second drive in case one fails.
