This was a dog allowed to run loose. Its the owner who should be responsible for the death of the child.
I have a German Shepherd and I never allow her off leash and certainly do not allow her to roam.
Sad to say, there are irresponsible dog owners out there.

It was a dog that did what centuries of selective breeding intended it to do: attack something. You just can't dismiss the instincts bred into dogs: pointers and setters point birds, retrievers retrieve, border collies herd animals., etc., etc.

I remember the words of the dog trainer from the obedience class I attended with my Shih-Tzu — NEVER EVER trust another dog not to attack or bite, they are animals and you do not know what they are going to do.
My Shih-Tzu was viciously attacked by a Katrina rescue dog who was “sweet and gentle as could be” according to the owner. NO question in my mind that if I hadn’t picked my dog up and held him over my head he would have been killed. The owner could barely control this “sweet” dog who had “never done anything of the sort before.”
I am always on guard around other dogs, even with my OWN large police dog mix.
Can I ask why? I want to get one , are they mean? I plan to have a well trained dog, NONE of our dogs really know what a leash is.
