There are a number of possibilities, including that the plane was sabotaged, that a smooth ditching was anticipated (or actually, that she was poisoned and the disabled plane, either successfully landed at the destination and unable to take off, or landed with a problem precluding takeoff) would further delay any medical assistance for the poisoned Fuddy). Keep in mind the initial delay, and how that would have brought Mr. Murphy into the plan, should there have been one.
I won't say it is impossible that Fuddy's death is pure coincidence and the result of natural causes, but Considering the sheer convenience of having a silenced witness for powers which stand to gain greatly from her demise, there is reason enough to suspect foul play.

Why would you plan to kill someone in a plane crash, but poison them first? sheesh. You can make the plot as elaborate as you want, but at some point it just becomes silly.
