The Macy’s in The Loop in Chicago is an amazing space that I urge anyone who appreciates architecture to visit. Don’t buy anything there though.

It used to be the jewel in the crown of Marshall Field’s. It was great as an old-fashioned department store. In addition to clothes and shoes for men and women, they not only had a notions department that sold sewing stuff and fabric, a toy department with beautiful German Steiff stuffed animals and even hunting depart that sold beautiful rifles and safari clothes.

During the holidays, the lines for the Walnut Room were huge. The Christmas tree was beautifully decorated. The store’s windows were full of wintry scenes and mechanical figures.

The staff was knowledgeable and courteous. I got my first grown-up suit there and had the same salesman for ten years; he actually kept me from buying overly trendy crap like flared pants and polyester leisure suits. He said, “Fashion is for people with no style.”

Prices were not low since they seldom had sales but the quality was great. I had a Scottish-made Shetland wool sweater for over 15 years.
