Little Mia Derouen, who would have turned 5 next week, died from face and head injuries after the family dog attacked her as she watched TV. Her mom dragged off the beast and barricaded herself and Mia in a bedroom while screaming for help.
A little girl in Louisiana was killed by her family’s pit bull, despite her mother’s frantic efforts to drag away the dog.
Mia Derouen, whose 5th birthday was next week, suffered severe facial, body and head injuries from Tuesday night’s horrendous attack and died at a nearby hospital, Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis told WWL-TV.

He said the scene was “horrific” and that officers had to fire 13 shots into the 'monster' dog before the family pet stopped charging.
The neighbor was lucky.
“Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 700 U.S. cities, pit bulls contributed to 78% of these deaths. Pit bulls make up about 6% of the total U.S. dog population.”

Why not just own a lion?
Normal dogs see their loving family as part of the pack, members they would never harm and would rather die FOR.
Pits are anything but normal dogs.
It’s not that at all. Right now, the narrative is that these dogs are harmless and are victims of ‘bad press’. So well-meaning people are adopting them, believing that (if they’re raised right) they’re no more harmful than a Labrador.
I believe that the vast majority of the pits out there are good dogs than do well with a decent upbringing. But that 1% can be fatal.
What happened to getting your kid a poodle?

I have to wonder if the child's mom was menstruating and that was the catalyst that switched the family pet into a monster?
...that and the fact the father/pack-leader was not home at the time.
The story doesn't say how long they had the dog, its sex or the other dog's sex.
Put bulls probably do more killing from houses in the burbs and country than in apartment situations.
So when should they not be considered as ‘pets’—when, say, only 10% of them attack? 5%? 1%? 0.5%?

There were two pit bulls in the house and I heard on the radio that the six month old female pit bull was in heat. I have not found anything about this written.
In my part of the country, pit bull owners are just about the only irresponsible dog owners. So unless dogs are regularly shipped in from the South, Puerto Rico or the Midwest, they are the only dogs available at the local pound.
IMO that’s just a terrible shame. Far better that all surrendered pit bulls get put down and more appropriate dogs are spared in order to be given out to adoptive families in their place.
These stories are dreadful and preventable. Ignorance is behind this willful blindness, just as so many close their eyes with respect to Islamists. In either case, you may be able to selectively breed out the trait over a long period of time. The inbreeding curse, however, insures perpetuation of the lust for blood trait. The gene is like a built in bomb that can go off at any time for any reason. One day the Islamist is going out on an operation with his American 'buddy,' defending him in combat and the next day he points his gun at the same American and blows his guts out. Same is true with the pit.
Any and all such mundane circumstances being possible triggers are just more reason why ‘pitties’ should not be in residential households.

Respect, properly train, and socialize your dog.
A sadly apt analogy.
