Why Are Zombie Shows Suddenly So Popular, What am I Missing?
March 29 2014 | lee martell

I don't have a tv of my own, but I see enough and hear enough to know that for some reason, Zombies are a hot sell on American tv right now. See the popularity of shows such as The Walking Dead. In fact, I heard there is even a new perfume for women coming to the market this spring, based on this show. The Walking Dead Perfume. Really? I'm not necessarily bothered by it, to each his own, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what has brought us to this level of fascination. I have read many, many of Dean Koontz books over the last ten years. I kept reading them, until he spent too much time trying to humanize the Antagonist by giving him/her a 'cool' sense of humor. I like my monsters scary and predominately unappealing, but there are always exceptions.

I tried off and on for years to appreciate Steven King, especially back in the 90's when he was cranking the books out like Wheat Linguine, but a rarely stayed with any of his work till completion. Most of Steven King's books read to me, like a never ending monologue, or as my junior high english teacher; Sister Richardene would say, a run-on sentence; something I still fall into today if not careful. I sampled some Anne Rice books. I never completed any of her stories because I was lost into the minutiae of character analysis, and I have never made the link between love and blood, at least not in the ritualistic manner of Rice. I see cable once in a while, I see the commercials about upcoming programs featuring Cannibalism, The Apocalypse, Tomorrow's Dystopia, Body Parts being ripped off and used as clubs. Is it that the Zombies has become today's most acceptable villian because most people share an energetic fear of the unknown? Is that it? To me, if you;ve seen one Hollywood Zombie with the strawberry jelly for blood and all the neat, symetrically placed spots of gangrene, you've seen them all. Am I wrong?

It is just teaching survival ‘ mental training’ for the younger population when the SHTF scenerios are upon us. Think, Hunger games, Divergent, Revolution, and all the Zombie movies and Walking Dead shows. ‘They’ must expect something to happen to keep coming up with these movies.

Very intriguing!! “A horde of enemies for which there is no guilt when destroying them.” I’m probably over thinking this (in itself one of my hobbies),but in other words, the Zombies often represent a highly stylized ritual of desensitized survival methods.
A sublimation and homogenization of the LATENT BARBARITY INSIDE OF US ALL if pushed to the point of fight or flight.

Zombies are a metaphor for low-information Obama voters. So, Zombie movies and shows are political satires with lots of gore (not Al).

While some zombie movies can be taken as metaphores for other things, the Walking Dead has deliberately stayed away from that. It is a series about survival in a post civilized world, and that's it.

The zombie genre, more than any other in horror, is able to put the audience into the situation. The fun of it is that you are always trying to come up with strategies yourself to survive the situation better than the characters in the show. This is often because the humans in the movies are idiots, and always get themselves into situations that they could easily have avoided.

Zombies are ok as long as they supplant vampire shows. Gad I hate all this romantic vampire shiite.

Actually there is only one zombie show that’s popular and its got a strongly conservative lean to it.

It’s Hollywood’s way of attempting to prepare us for the real deal with fedzilla’s bureaucrats and obozo’s SS and Brown Shirt wannabes playing the zombies.

How can corpses reanimate?

I mean, think about it, they died, usually for a reason. The body is broken to the point they died, usually in some catastrophic failure of major systems or a system.

How do they reanimate without any repair to the original damage?

I could accept that some corpses could become zombies IF the death was unusual like suffocation and didn’t result in massive trauma, but seriously, the whole concept is stupid from a medical/science standpoint.

What scientific rationale is there for it? Has anyone really tried to describe it? Once an animal dies, organs immediately start to decompose, individual cells rupture, and chemical breakdowns and processes begin. Think about the efforts medical science uses to do transplants and the short period of time a candidate organ has to be viable.

That has always been my problem with zombies—the whole idea is preposterous!

Spot on. I see it also as desensitizing society to mass shooting of large numbers of human beings in the open.

"It's easy on film and video games...therefore..."

Because the fantasy of shooting brain-dead idiots in the head is very appealing, at least to me.

I’m still amazed at the way they dealt with Lizzy. A brutal solution in a brutal world.

Look at the flowers Lizzy.

"And I'll bet some parents actually let their children watch that crap."

LOL!!! Every week, our entire family gathers in front of the TV to watch The Walking Dead. The kids range from 2yrs - 16(7 total). They all love it.

they don't have a big PR machine like the goathumpers do so killing them gets no backlash...

It’s cyclical. Zombies are hot now. Werewolves were hot 5 to 10 years ago. Vampires were hot in the 90s (i.e. Blade, Interview with a Vampire, etc.). Aliens were hot in the 80s (i.e. E.T).

It all goes in cycles based on popular culture.
