Indeed; this has become the Age of Taking Offense. Whatever happened to the philosophy of "sticks and stones"? Shows as recent as "Seinfeld" could probably not be made today because it would offend this or that group.
A few years ago I read an article about the Vaudeville era. Apparently Vaudeville entertainers frequently made ethnic jokes onstage, especially about the Irish, Jews, and Asians. According to the article, Irish, Jews, and Asians in the audiences laughed as hard as anybody else. I think the way we are now, so touchy and offended, whining and demanding apologies and getting people fired or forcing them to go to sensitivity training, etc., is utterly ridiculous.
