Word For The Day, Monday, 3/24/14
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
abnegation; noun
noun 1. the act or an instance of abnegating, or denying oneself some rights, conveniences, etc.: It was a time of austerity and abnegation. 2. the act of reliquishing or giving up a right, possession, etc.: abnegation of parental responsibilities.
Etymology: 1550s, from L. abnegationem (nom. abnegatio) "refusal, denial," noun of action from abnegatus, pp. of abnegare, from ab- "off, away from" + negare "to deny" (see deny).
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
if you do, you must take another ridic pic of yourself over there!
Thank you!
I’ve seen some Chinese stuff on that bizarre foods show that I probably wouldn’t eat-mostly the sweet dishes, or the ones made with offal (awful?)-most of it would probably be okay with me, but I can’t imagine thunder thighs chowing down on seafood stew with hairy crabs and non-caviar roe sacks, or stir fried rooster testicles and combs...
There are some things I like that my 1st husband and I cooked and ate that are ranch or camp food, but we were brought up in that area and culture-snake steak, aka grilled rattlesnake, fried or sauteed mountain oysters, brains and eggs, nopalitos, tripas etc are tasty to me-MrT5 would not even willingly smell those things, but he was not from here...
I made a salad with a can of tuna, the last of the high priced fresh spinach, a tomato, some onion, a bit of cheddar cheese, and as I’m eating, a thunderstorm just blew in. The cats ran for cover as soon as the thunder started. Husky girl is begging for bits of cheese, and now it is hailing-and with no carport or garage at this place, my 4x4 is only dubiously protected by trees over the parking space-maybe someday I’ll understand why all this is going on...
Stormy weather calls for rain music-I need to put all the rain tunes on one CD one of these days-
“Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan
Riders on the storm”
Is “Riders on the Storm” rock or jazz? I call it jazz, but a lot of the Doors stuff is jazz-like to me...
I think it’s almost bluesy.
It is, actually-but I always think of the blues as more the southern variety from childhood-almost torch songs-Since I Fell For You-one of my favs-Cry Baby, Or Ray Charles-stuff like that...
This one sounds jazz-y to me, too-
“No, I can’t dance, I can’t talk
Only thing about me is the way I walk
No, I can’t dance, I can’t sing
I’m just standing here selling everything
But I can walk
No I can’t dance, I can’t dance
Hot sun beating down
Burning my feet just walking around
Hot sun making me sweat
‘Gators getting close, hasn’t got me yet”
BTW-the town in Washington where that terrible landslide happened-Snohomish-is where the kennel was that we bought Husky girl from...
There’s a certain cowboy twang to the guitar.
It sort of defies pigeonholing. You could see a lounge lizard singing the song to old ladies in Vegas.
Which one? I can’t picture either song in Vegas, but I don’t know any ladies/women of any age who go to Vegas, so that may be just me...
Riders on the Storm
Oh-I still don’t hear Vegas there-Vegas sounds like Wayne Newton-gag-or maybe a drugged-up Elvis.
I’m really into the Doors-it must be the rain. The cub really hated the Doors when she was a kid-she used to go into her room when her dad and I would crank them up-we figured that she probably thought we were getting stoned, because a lot of the TV shows said that is what parents did...
“This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end”...
Doors and Roy Orbison, sad basement music, good for when you’re feeling low.
C’mon, can’t you see “Touch Me” as a big production number with a horn section and dancing girls?
We don’t have basements around here, but I get the drift-
“I was alright for awhile, could smile for awhile
But I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say hello-
Oh, you wished me well, you couldn’t tell
That I’d been crying over you”...
That is just about my favorite sad song since my very early teens-Guns and Roses “Cold November Rain” is another. I know-quite the gap in years and styles there...
Actually yes, I can-and it isn’t a pretty picture. But “Touch Me’ was really mainstream compared to their other stuff-like Cream’s “White Room” from that same time.
I don’t like sad movies, sad books or sad songs. Avoid all three as much as possible.
Sad songs reminds me of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald which reminds me of HD. Did he give us up for lent?
Tune in and turn them on.
