A Yemeni man returning to his village through a jungle late at night phoned his wife to tell her that he was being devoured by a hyena.
The man, in his 50s, was walking back home through a forest in the western Yemeni province of Rima when he was intercepted by a hyena.
He phoned his wife and told her the predator was attacking him and could eat him, newspapers said, adding that his wife quickly sent their sons to search for him.
When the sons reached him, it was too late. They only found the head and feet of their father, the papers said, quoting a police spokesman.

Someday, when I direct my great post-apocalyptic film, I’m going to have to track that fellow and his hyena down.
Definitely worth a cameo appearance!

There was a show on the “History Channel” sometime back about an animal killing nearly a hundred people, mostly women and children. This was several hundred years ago and many thought it was a vampire.
They did a lot of research and discovered it was a hyena and it was killed by a hunter. They even found it’s remains in a Paris museum.

Hyenas in Yemen?
And as an additional thought, why wasn't this guy armed in some way.
I would never go into the woods without a weapon...and I live in GA/USA.

Whenever I take a walk around the yard or around the nearby woods I always put a .22 model PP in my pocket. I have never needed it except to kill venomous snakes and even they it wasn’t to save me from anything, I just don’t want those snakes around.
About the only thing around here which might be dangerous are wild hogs or dogs. Rarely, black bears have been seen. I might just upgrade to a light but not very small 9mm Beretta brigadier. It is just a bit too large for comfort tho.
