Word For The Day, Monday, March 14, 2014 blarney
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
blarney; noun noun 1. flattering or wheedling talk; cajolery. 2. deceptive or misleading talk; nonsense; hooey: a lot of blarney about why he was broke. verb (used with object), verb (used without object), blar·neyed, blar·ney·ing. 3. to flatter or wheedle; use blarney: He blarneys his boss with the most shameless compliments. Origin: 176070; after the hamlet Blarney, in Ireland; see Blarney stone 1796 (which is said to make a persuasive flatterer of any who kiss it), in a castle near Cork, Ireland; reached wide currency through Lady Blarny, the smooth-talking flatterer in Goldsmith's "Vicar of Wakefield" (1766).
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
The ACC tourney is supposed to be in Washington in 2016.
I officially retract my statement about SU getting a loss (back when they were undefeated) being good for them.
well had they stopped at ONE loss maybe that would have been true, but no, they had to KEEP GOING. it has just been ugly to watch.
I know nothing about college basketball, I hate the game, I’d rather be waterboarded than be forced to watch a basketball game.
That should just about cover that topic. :)
I fill out my brackets like chicks do, I go with cool names and stuff. Gonzaga, I like that one.
i just noticed Joe Tacopina’s name listed as an author for that article? he is a lawyer who has represented high profile peeps like Joran Van DerSloot etc. what’s he doing working for NYPost?
had forgotten that character flaw of your’s ; ) yeah, i like Gonzaga too, bc it’s the same name as xsboy’s HS, also a Jesuit school. you like lax though, right?
I haven’t tried anything else in beer - but my husband likes to marinate steaks in beer - I like my way better.... ;^)
I’m not big on college basketball either - but usually watch the March tournaments. But like football, those who follow basketball recognize players and enjoy watching thru the season. I get it. What I don’t get is how running that court seems like it is 100 yards long, but watching looks like it is 20 feet long! ;^)
Why thank you, Whyisa.
I recall that your boy went to that prep school. ;)
I love lacrosse! Hockey too. Football is meh.
My “son in law” and his team lost the state div II hockey semifinal game last friday night. :(
I was the youngest and shortest kid in my neighborhood, and sucked at bball, so I never got into it.
Democrats are such an embarassment.
That was real. Really? I thought it was a low-rent spoof at first.
She bought the last one at the local Hardware store. It was a demo and already was assembled and had gas in it! Her oldest son just landed a job at Lowe’s and she was going to wait until he qualified for an employee discount, but she decided she’d better take the “bird in the hand”. They offered he a discount because it was the last one and it had a couple hours time on it. She says it works great. It’s a little smaller than her previous snowblower (a Craftsman that never worked properly) and she says it works great. The smaller size is easier for her to handle.
Have you tried Beer Bread? It’s very easy and very good, although it doesn’t keep well. You need to eat it all at a sitting which is a lot for 2 people. That is why I don’t make it any more. The beer is the leavening.
Oh too bad about the hockey loss. Xsboy had his last collegiate hockey game on march 5. SU lost to Oakland in the nationals. First time SU made it to nationals though so no shame there.
I was in Home Depot getting paint, a few days back, they still had salt, and snow equipment near the front even.
Enhancing his local profile.
Joe Cockypenis, loves the NYMedia, and they love him right back....
You can cook almost any meat in beer...
Poultry wise, I’ve never felt the urge to use it on chicken, but some on Duck works.
I didn’t take a liking to college LAX until #1 son started playing.
Then he gave it up, for Football...
No, though it would if the marital ethnicities were reversed, however...
