Word For The Day, Monday, March 14, 2014 blarney
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
blarney; noun noun 1. flattering or wheedling talk; cajolery. 2. deceptive or misleading talk; nonsense; hooey: a lot of blarney about why he was broke. verb (used with object), verb (used without object), blar·neyed, blar·ney·ing. 3. to flatter or wheedle; use blarney: He blarneys his boss with the most shameless compliments. Origin: 176070; after the hamlet Blarney, in Ireland; see Blarney stone 1796 (which is said to make a persuasive flatterer of any who kiss it), in a castle near Cork, Ireland; reached wide currency through Lady Blarny, the smooth-talking flatterer in Goldsmith's "Vicar of Wakefield" (1766).
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Want to try making soda bread and need to go out for buttermilk. Your bread sounds yummy!
Are you doing your sweet kielbasa?
That’s a great song!
No i will
Cook it in with the cabbage.
You can always make fake buttermilk with milk and lemon juice.
Is it me or does that sound naughty?
I feel your pain. It feels like sore muscles.
But the driveway is clear now, more or less. Come on, sun, do your thing.
He was stunned when I served it up - It is so much fun cooking for him.
Good stuff!
I have ‘Cuse going all the way in my bracket. It’d be fun to be on M street again if they did!
I’ve never eaten corned beef and cabbage.
Corned beef has a strong flavor - if you are ever interested buy some sliced corned beef at a deli to taste -
I’m not Irish, corned beef and cabbage makes me gag, and I’ve never seen a leprechaun-but I do like beer, and I’m wearing a green shirt and a sprig of Oxalis-Happy St. Patrick’s day!
If Obama thinks his blarney
Is still taking in the masses
He might want to sign up for
More successful sales classes
The bloom is off of Obamacare
And the lines growing longer
Of those who’ve lost coverage
And their outrage is stronger
They liked what they paid for-
Now they’ve been sold trash-
It pay for lots of deadbeats
With workers’ confiscated cash
I’m supposed to go with my compadre to look at some possible work-this is not a happy time-I’m starting to feel like we’re Irish travelers, out looking for construction jobs...
yeah, but i doubt that tastes as good as something made with the real thing. Besides, i wanted to get out just to see what the outside world looks like. it’s not bad, the roads are clear, everything down to the bare. And we don’t even have any sun and the temps are 25.
i have had corned beef only once, when our friends the Gallaghers had a st patricks day party 2 years ago. it was good, but i would not make it bc no one else would eat it. xsbaby had it last night at bible study for the first time and liked it.
i imagine it is very fun cooking for your SIL. it is very nice to have an appreciative audience for your cooking. i get great gratification from xsfiance, since my own family aren’t all that responsive. and canned corned beef sound HIDEOUS, why would anyone ever open it and eat it???
I think we all change what we like to eat over time - We love brisket and have it quite often so the cut of meat is familiar to us. The process to make it corned beef adds very distinctive flavor though - and carrots cooked in the beer “broth” in the crock are amazing!
prayers up for better times, T5!!! A++++
I recall my Mom making fried potatoes and canned corned beef “hash” when I was a kid. To me, knowing what fresh corned beef tastes like, the canned tastes over cooked and mushy.
it does sound yummy. what else can you cook in a beer broth? i make brisket with at Dr. Pepper broth and it’s quite good!
Hope you have some work - maybe our pending spring weather will start up some work for you!
