On April 8, 2014, support and updates for Windows XP will no longer be available. Don't let your PC go unprotected.
What is Windows XP end of support? Microsoft has provided support for Windows XP for the past 12 years. But now the time has come for us, along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources toward supporting more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences.
As a result, after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date. (If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive antimalware signature updates for a limited time, but this does not mean that your PC will be secure because Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates to help protect your PC.)
If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.

For a free Email Management Program a Freebe is EM Client at downloads.com. The default W-8 mail program STINKS!!! Anything that used to be in places you could find it has either been renamed for no sensible reason, moved to some obscure program, or left out entirely. SEARCH STINKS!!!!
W-8 or W-Obama as I call it is a huge downgrade in programs although the machine may run faster. Many functions now require several extra steps to do what a click once took care of.
I've owned MS systems from W/98/2 up through XP and not had a complaint. But W/8 should have never been released for a Desktop or Laptop OS. A Pox on you Microsoft. Some say Linux is difficult. So is W/8. Linux is free.
Last of all a warning to any Dial Up users. You must get an up to date Modem with W/8 Drivers. Be ready for nearly 600MB of Upgrades even on 8.1. IIRC XP Home Edition after 10 years only needed about 250-300MB updates today of it's history including all service packs.
I take that back. I did ME upgrade on a computer and had to uninstall it because I could not get it to either Disk scan or Defrag even in Safe Mode. XP will likely be MS greatest OS in reliability and easy to use.

I'm trying to install a old copy of XP that I got to make a virtual machine with Oracle Virtualbox and am wondering how I'll be getting around the two-week pre-authenticate limit.
I recently upgraded from XP to 8 on three desktop machines, one of which is a five year old Netbook, and like it a lot. Win 8 is a lot more robust than XP. I do use Start8 and configure it to boot directly to the desktop so it's just like the XP experience, but better.
I also recently got a Win8 phone and a Win8 tablet and like them quite a bit. The Metro interface is great on touchscreens.
We saw this coming last year and upgraded to Windows 8. Love it (besides the Metro).
Last year I bought an HP desktop with an AMD quad core and 8GB or RAM for 429 from Best Buy. The hardware upgrade alone is worth it.
Download classic shell and win 8 is no different than win 7.
BTW, I believe win 9 comes out next year......only a few months away.
Forgot to add it also has 2TB of memory.

Translation: You must upgrade to further enhance Microsoft's revenue stream, and if you don't we're going to do what we can to make sure you're not protected from viruses.
I realize that XP is an old product, and the Microsoft is under no obligation to continue to patch the OS forever. However, I find it interesting that they will simply stop providing anti-virus updates as well. I wonder if the other various companies that make antivirus software are also simply going to abandon those users who for whatever reason choose to stay on XP.
Frankly, it would surprise me if they did so. I'm sure that eventually the market of XP boxes simply won't be large enough to support a whole lot of effort in providing support to folks who still use XP, but I would imagine the current numbers would.
It's just another example of microsoft caring more about its own desires than those of its customers. XP users really ought to be looking at other alternatives, IMO, but then again, I freely admit to being an anti-microsoft bigot.
Is that the live tiles that you can turn off, or remove, or delete permanently?
Some, like Avast will continue support for XP.
Here is the security (all free of course)I have on my XP, with an eye to hardening it.
I did complete XP reinstalls, and then all my Microsoft updates, EMET, free avast with online security, Comodo, Spyware blaster, Superantispyware, Malwarebytes and Glary Utilities for on demand scans, in Chrome and Firefox, I use Adblock plus, no-script, https everywhere, disconnect, WOT, Window name eraser, and I am probably going to install a free VPN.
I only intend to use it as a backup, but I do have the impression that I would still be pretty safe using it.
I have also tried to tweak the settings on everything, (cookie settings etc.).
Seriously How? The Customize Icon only allows for naming them. True you might figure it out going into Start up "IF" you can figure out which command is for METRO.
Never mind I finally saw turn tile off button. You have to Right Click the tile for it to pop up at the bottom of the screen.
Interesting thought but we're talking about my old copy of XP which has installed/loaded fine into a new virtual box. It's installing SP2 even as we speak, now I got to find where I can download an .iso for sp3, sp4, etc.
Virtualbox is SUPER!!!!
Is metro that start page in 8.1?
