A judge ruled Wednesday that two women who were legally married in Iowa cant divorce in Alabama, which doesnt recognize same-sex marriages.
Circuit Judge Karen Hall of Huntsville issued a two-sentence order throwing out the uncontested divorce of Shrie Michelle Richmond and Kirsten Allysse Richmond.
Shrie Richmond filed the complaint this month saying the two were legally married in Dubuque, Iowa, in 2012. The suit said the two women, who are separated, no longer get along and want a divorce.
The other woman didnt fight the divorce. But the judges decision said the case was being dismissed because laws in Alabama, which still prohibit same-sex unions, do not apply in such cases.
The Iowa Supreme Court overturned that states ban on gay marriages in 2009, and state law requires couples seeking a divorce in the state to live there for one year beforehand.
Attorney Patrick Hill, who represents Shrie Richmond, said neither of the women wants to move to get a divorce.
Theyre both from here in Alabama, and this is where their homes, family and friends are, he said.

I read a book by a Saudi Princess back in the 90s. She said the rich have more than one wife, because they can, and the poor might, because if you have very little, it doesn’t take much to pitch an extra tent next to your first one. The middle class is where one wife is enough.
I love the middle class. It gets the morality of an issue right more often than the rich and poor do, if only because immorality is less practical.
Same sex spouses should get divorced in the state in which they married. Marriage is a state law question, and not every state has a law allowing same sex marriage (Thank God).
Looks like this was a state court, which tend to be more sane. Wait until the leftist federal courts get to weigh in.
The King HAS to spread the wealth. If he doesn't HIS OWN FAMILY does him in.
He also gives BILLION$ away every year in charity to poorer countries, both Muslim AND Christian.
As I said, I spoke with ALL the Saudi men I worked with and they ALL have one wife and, with their salaries, could indeed, afford another. But they ALL said: One wife is enough.
I think many folks still cling to the old cliches about the Muslims. They ought to LIVE there to see, hear and SMELL what it's like.
One VERY odd thing: Saudi employees can CHANGE their birth date THREE times. This allows them to work longer, which many of them do.
You aren’t married in the eyes of the state if they don’t recognize your marriage.
Gay bullies in the newsroom need to STFU.
