The fundamental problem is that compulsory government schooling was a Prog idea from the beginning to turn Catholic immigrant children into Protestants.
Fundamentally, Progs have always controlled teacher training and curriculum development. Progs have always pushed at the boundaries of society’s morals and ethics.
Fundamentally, government schools is single-payer and socialist-entitlement schooling and was easy pickings for the the unions.
Unions are a symptom. Getting rid of them is like giving a tylenol to a person with a crushed leg.
