I agree that P&F were handled with sleaze. They did sorta shoot themselves in the foot a couple of times. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, so it’s easy to criticize them for mentioning the word “nuclear” or “fusion”. If they had said that it was a very strong unknown chemical reaction, they’d have broken through. But they were up against entrenched budget infighters that know how to destroy competitors.
That's exactly what they should have done. Nevertheless, even if any nuclear process was ruled out, there's still the effect of anomalous heat which should have been studied.
