Daylight Saving Time: A Spring Forward or a Step Back?

We’ll put our unabashed bias as a lover of the night sky right up front: we loathe Daylight Saving Time. And it’s not just because of the biannual hunt through our home for the dozen-odd non-networked clocks that it instigates twice a year. For astronomers, the shift to DST means that true darkness falls much later in the evening, marking the abrupt end of the school star party season not long after March. You don’t have to go far north to about latitude 45 degrees to find areas where it doesn’t get dark until about 11PM local towards mid-summer. And sure, we gain back an extra hour of morning darkness, albeit that too soon dwindles towards summer as well.

The primary rational behind DST use is to cut energy consumption. Studies done by the U.S. Department of Transportation during the adoption of DST during the 1970’s OPEC Oil Embargo and the energy crisis showed a small but measurable net savings during the implementation of DST, as well as a small decrease in the crime rate. On the down side, many find it difficult to adjust their body clocks to the shift, with many morning commuters now confronted with darkness.

...

But there are some rumblings of change. This year, Idaho is pushing to scrap DST altogether. And, as is the norm in the often curious state of Florida, lawmakers have proposed to swing even further in the other direction, with a bill dubbed the “Sunshine Protection Act” looking to put the entire state on permanent DST year round in hopes of increasing tourism.

And just last year, a failed White House petition brought up the issue of ending DST.

That extra hour of sunlight is what causes global warming.

I HATE DST.

The days naturally get longer all by themselves, without our any of our 'help'. Just leave it alone!

Daylight saving time is a BLIP in my life. I get over it in a couple of days. I will only think about it in SIX months. :o)

My mother was from Arizona where they don't have DST. I guess I got my ho-hum attitude from her.

I wonder why they don’t just do 15 minutes four days in a row. Monday after setting the clocks forward is absolutely awful. By the end of the work day, it is terrible.

I absolutely hate daylight savings time. Right now, I’m getting up with the sun, but when daylight savings time kicks in, it will be like getting up in the middle of the night.

I don't. It screws up my body clock for months.

This year, Idaho is pushing to scrap DST altogether.

Idaho house bill 559, to be precise. This state is screwed up enough time-zone-wise already without DST. The north part of the state is on Pacific time and the south, Mountain. Try explaining that to someone trying to get in touch with you, especially if you happen to travel between zones.

Split the difference and leave it there year round.

Since this happens TWICE a year, your body clock must HURT from all that ticking!

.

Drink heavily. That might help.

Im thinking of working to pit a End Daylight Savings TIme proposition on the California Ballot.

It would simply say. “California shall at all times observe Pacific Standard Time”

Ive gotten a tremendously lopsided support from 90 percent of the people Ive broached this topic with thus far.

the three plus weeks of body clock adjustment just isnt worth it,

The north part of the state is on Pacific time and the south, Mountain.

That's because the Northern part of the state belongs to Spokane...and the Southern part to Salt Lake City...

And the sun will rise and set according to it’s own rules without regard to the silly little games we play.

I prefer to think that in other states the sun travels east to west, and in Idaho it travels south to north.
