I guess I’m from the same era as you, for I agree. THOSE bands were The Heavy Six. (”heavy,” in this case, means best, most popular and influential) And then came Van Halen... :))

I graduated high school in 1977. IMHO MTV killed music. With the advent of the music video, any dirtbag with a camcorder became an”artist.” And it all became ego-driven to be the “entertainer-vocalist.” So who is the guitarist for Mariah Carey? Who played drums for Britney Spears? MTV killed music by killing the great bands. No great bands, no great music.

OK, old fart rant over. You damn kids get off my lawn. Where’s my World’s Fair spoon?

I agree. MTV turned things to the visual and away from the music. Watch Heehaw sometime. Those were some ugly individuals but they could sing and play. Now you have to be a world class model before anyone will even listen to you.

I thought disco led to punk.

Well, that too. But it was also the giant stage shows, 20 minute meandering guitar solos, pretentious lyrics etc. Punk/new wave got back to bands with simple or no stage show playing 3 minute songs. It was about bringing back the earlier energy and simplicity and the feeling that anyone could do it that seemed to be lost in the era of stadium rock.

The first rock concert I ever went to was Blue Cheer opening for The Who in a medium sized auditorium. I couldn’t believe how loud Blue Cheer was, but I think The Who was even louder. At least they had more Marshall stacks. Of course once it gets up over 130db it’s hard to tell.

I was meaning more on how they do now as old rockers. the stones I saw last was a superbowl show Jagger’s still got the energy and Richards was still standing somehow. the remains of the who at another s.b. stunk. Plant and Page and Jones amazed me in this.

Unfair comparison. You'd have to wait until Led Zep play Superbawl XXXVI to compare Superbawl halftime shows.
