That sounds so weird to me, because it would have been unheard of when I had my kid-It really sounds like a CYA legally by the hospital to have the baby with his/her own doctor when he/she is barely born, but what isn’t these days? The Edwards wannabees make everything a hassle, even a happy event like birth-it sounds more like the aftermath of a workers comp injury...

All three of mine had doctors of their own. I would think it’s weird not to.

well it’s an unfortunate fact of life that there are catastrophic births and life-threatening conditions that can occur in an instant during a birth, with potentially horrible consequences. it was ever so, but they didn’t have the know how/technology to deal with them when my great-grandmothers were giving birth in the fields of eastern europe, and so those babies died. i see absolutely no problem with having a pediatrician at the ready, bc as Ti said, the baby is it’s own person and a pediatrician is the correct doctor for him/her. yes, litigation has spawned CYA, but there is no denying that there are complicated births. same reason i would never risk giving birth at home or with a midwife, i want any potential problems dealt with by the properly trained professional.
