I would say that is a reasonable assumption. Also gas in car gas tanks will be OK for another year maybe but if its anywhere where air can get to it it will start breaking down fairly rapidly by now on their timeline. And as such cars will become very erratic especially newer cars with all the computer controlled ignition systems. They can't handle bad gas very well.

Diesel should still be OK though.

I know I would stick to what’s familiar to me which is why I would head for one of the islands in the great lakes. It only has a population of around 700 now and the cold winter would probably freeze the dead solid for easy clearing. The 6 mile by 13 mile island would be pretty comfortable for a couple hundred people for quite a while.
