I really dislike the way the file menues present and the difficulty of selecting a file without missing the window a little with the cursor and having the menu disappear and having to start over again.

The focus shifts to the window you selected by mistake, bringing it in front of your old window. You can rotate through your windows by holding the Alt key down and pressing the tab key.

I can’t seem to maneuver up and down the filepath from explorer like I used to on XP.

I prefer the file manager in Free Commander to that in post-XP Windows Explorer:

Looking for some way to modify / retrofit W7 to operate more like XP

Try Classic Shell.

Yes, Classic Shell is a real help.

Thanks - just installed classic shell and we’ll give it a go and see how it works.

One minor annoyance - I use Mozilla Sea Monkey for browser, and like the tabbed set up - but whenever I open a tab i get a really annoying and loud “b’ZZZoit” sound.
Have tried to disable it in control panel, but can’t.
Tried locating the sound / *.wav file to delete it, but can’t find that either (and I listened to all of them trying to find it). Nothing to change sounds in Edit > Preferences either.
Any suggestions?
TIA - GV

Installed classic shell but can’t see much of a difference.
Only the start menu seems a little different but it does not work any better.
Explorer is still slow, quirky, and annoying when saving or fetching files.

So much for that experiment, but thanks 4 suggestion anyway.

Still getting the fingers on chalkboard noise when opening a window or tab in Sea Monkey, too.

Apparently i’m not smart enough to dig that out and fix it.
Posted question on MOzilla TS forum and we’ll see if they have any ideas.
