Did you ever notice how closely analogous ST:TOS is to The Odyssey? Kirk was always involved with some strange woman, like Odysseus with Circe, and with Calypso, later in time but at the beginning of the narrative, as we learn in Book V where Odysseus is just thinking about getting back to his wife ... but I digress.

Note Odysseus has his "redshirts" too, and in fact loses his whole crew. But the point of analogy I have in mind is the Mediterranean with the Galaxy, as made most clear in the "Halloween episode", with the cat. At the end it is revealed that Kirk is dealing with Extragalactic pipecleaner creatures from "beyond the edge of the world" as it were.

So, here we are in OUR Island Universe!
