This will end up costing lives. Over the years, I’ve stopped and given assistance at several wrecks. I know that is fairly stupid with lawyers on the prowl. In conjunction with my employment, I’ve both taken and taught first aid. Don’t do any harm is a directive and I stop out of that concern as well as a desire to help.
Over Christmas, I came across a woman who had just been thrown out of a moving car by her husband as it termed out. All I did was keep people from moving her as she had initially landed on her head. She was incoherent with eyes dilated and unfocused. I reassured her and kept her quiet as the other people were blocking the road in both directions. I talked very briefly with the first responders when they arrived and then I left. I later learned the husband was arrested for assault.
My daughter and neighbors were shocked that I stopped. Their first concern was that the husband would be coming after me as one neighbor knows him and is frankly afraid of him. My daughter says, “She’s going to sue you.” As this guy in FL found out, life is more complicated than it used to be.
Yep. I occasionally pick up hitchhikers if I think they need it. Picked up two young girls at sunset, because they were walking down an unlighted road - prime candidates for being flattened.
My friends (and later my wife) told me I took a terrible chance. One false accusation...
But you have to do what is RIGHT. That is why we’re not Liberals.
