I watched that live on TV and Perot was genuinely taken aback by the murmurs in the crowd.
I wish he would have said something like "I referred to 'You people" - as IN THE FREAKING AUDIENCE! Why is it that I can speak to any other gathering and use that term, and 'in the audience' is inferred by them and they have no problem with that term? Even if I did mean that in the 'you black people' context, I find it odd that you are offended. Do you not segregate yourself at every opportunity? Consider all your associations: 'Black Sheriffs', 'Black Mayors', "Black Caucus', 'Black Students', ad nauseum. You now even want black-only dorms in college. Please sir, pointing to some complainer in the audience, explain that disconnect."
