Edgar Allen Poe had a fear of being buried alive.

As do I. But he put his fear into stories. I don’t know how to do that without my mainspring going, “SPROING!”

I’m afraid of becoming a horrifically reanimated abomination.
Imagine being in an accident, letting go, then waking up a technological horror of science.
“We saved you!” - beaming doc/mad scientist who has zero idea what he has created.
Medical science is remarkably close to “six million dollar man” meets “RoboCop” scenario.

The cat was looking for something, and stuck his head out to ask a question just as I snapped the photo.
The catz like to sleep in it every Halloween. Scared fool out of the teen twins when they bumped the coffin and 2 catz shot out of it. ;)

I’m sure I would have been startled, too.

Edgar Allen Poe had a fear of being buried alive. He incorporated that fear into "The Premature Burial", "The Fall of the House of Usher", "Berenice", and probably other writings.
I don't know what caused his obsession. Public obsession with vivisepulture comes and goes. The incident of obsession closest to Poe's life was from the 1870s to 1900, long after Poe's 1849 death.

Oh. Good. The coffin is MUCH less expensive. I spent about $100 on materials for that one. I caught the cheap synthetic red satin on sale.
My family is always on me about getting handles put on it.
I'm holding out.
My passing should be awkward for them.

It’s possible there was a single incident of which he became aware during a formative period of his life.
