Spike Lee rants about gentrification - New York's black culture being erased by white residents

The Brooklyn-raised director launched into an argument about the drawbacks of gentrification Compared Fort Greene Park to the 'motherf*****' Wesminster Dog Show' because it is so clean Lee was raised in Brooklyn but has lived in the Upper East Side since 2000

Spike Lee went on a long-winded rant against gentrification in New York City on Tuesday night when he was asked to argue against the development of poorer neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Harlem.

The director, who has focused on racial issues and gentrification in his films, blasted an audience member at the Pratt Institute who started defending the changes in the neighborhoods.

'Let me just kill you right now,' Lee said to the unidentified questioner.

Lee pointed the finger at white New Yorkers who have moved into historically black neighborhoods and changed the environment, arguing that those changes have caused the areas to evolve into something completely different.

'Here’s the thing: I grew up here in Fort Greene. I grew up here in New York. It’s changed. And why does it take an influx of white New Yorkers in the south Bronx, in Harlem, in Bed Stuy, in Crown Heights for the facilities to get better?' he said.

'When you see white mothers pushing their babies in strollers, three o’clock in the morning on 125th Street, that must tell you something.'

It wouldn’t bother me, either, as long as Vinnie wasn’t tormented by incomplete barbecue dinners or something.

My irish grandmother believed in ghosts. She passed away when I was 3, I think, so I never had a chance to hear her stories firsthand.

So many very serious people claim experience of ghosts that I think one must, at least, keep an open mind.

"have to...see"

The last movie I was lectured that everybody had to see or their lives were ruined was "Titanic" the 1997 version. I didn't see it on purpose then, but I've reliably informed that the ship sank after hitting an iceberg. Is that what happened?

The thing is, they were white ethnic neighborhoods before they were ‘historic’ black neighborhoods.

I always use to see this guy walking on the upper east side of Manhattan on Park avenue which is as white as it gets.

so a man is complaining that his old neighborhood is being improved and filled with people that work during the day and need to sleep at night? They have the resources to own nice dogs? They don’t like extra activity going on in the streets because they pay millions of dollars to live in a city with the highest taxes in the country and desire to be safe?

Yea, I don’t want neighbors that work a steady job, live responsibly and pay their taxes and improve the community.

The original Harlemites other than the Native Americans (Lenape) were Dutch farm folk in New Amsterdam, New Netherlands.

Has Spike Lee tried to return their culture to the area?

I believe you’re correct. My mom saw “Titanic,” and used a whole lot of ladylike words to say, “It sucked.” I have not seen it.

White gentry liberals don’t have the same values morals and culture as blacks, ironically they have more in common with Reagan conservatives than to their political allies..

Let me put on what will obviously be labeled my racist thinking cap here. So be it.

What culture have black communities created for themselves that is worth saving? Look at crime statistics. Look at prison populations. Look at the depressing communities of Detroit, Birmingham, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, and other majority black liberal run cities. If black culture is reflected by the likes of Spike Lee and hip hop music is it worth keeping? There’s no excuse for the sad state of Detroit. It has been black run since Coleman Brown and 85% black. One of these days Spike Lee and the other race huxters are going to have to take responsibility for themselves. but then again, if that happened, they wouldn’t vote 99% democrat.

My neighbor also grew up in Brooklyn in the '50s and said her family moved out when the neighborhood became less "middle working class."

Glad to see there are some improvements happening.

He’s at his best when he directs from someone else’s script. ‘25th Hour’ was one of the best films of the last decade.

The plot doesn’t sound like anything I’d be interested in.

There is no plot. It’s all character and atmosphere.
