I think you’re missing the point — it’s not that people are thinking jogging with headphones/earbuds is a “good idea”, it’s that the response by police was undoubtedly callous, inhumane, and showing a lack of both human empathy/compassion and understanding. (As one of the previous posters mentioned, he probably wouldn’t have heard the police either because he’s mostly-deaf.)

That is even before taking into consideration the lawfulness of their actions. Their actions could be wholly unjustified with no actual infraction occurring and the “jaywalking” charge an ex post facto cover-your-ass story by the police. // The police have [organizationally] earned the distrust of the general populous with severe and illegal actions (no-knock raids, the “accidents” during the Dorner hunt, asset-seizure, drug-planting, and “respect my authority”) — so giving them the benefit of the doubt is becoming rather unreasonable.

The Austin Police Chief has doubled down on the incident...

“APD Police Chief Art Acevedo defends jogger arrest, said he would have been less generous” Acevedo said. “Quite frankly, she wasn’t charged with resisting, and she was lucky I wasn’t the arresting officer because I wouldn’t have been quite as generous.”

So?

It’s a free country, mostly. You seem to think it’s acceptable for jackbooted thugs to hammer this girl for jogging because she was wearing headphones. I imagine you love the taste of boot leather.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo is concerned about jaywalking... and GUN CONTROL:

APD Chief Disappointed by U.S. Senate Gun Vote

FTA:

“Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo sees the votes against Senate passage as defying what most citizens support.“It is disappointing to see members of the United States Senate going against not only the will of the vast majority of Americans, but against the recommendations of major city police chiefs from all over the country,” Acevedo said.

I support the cops. I also support liberty. The two aren't mutually exclusive and when they collide it's more than fair, right and proper to comment on it.

Are you suggesting it's the people demanding freedom heavy handed, ever expanding government control who've become tyrannical Mr. McGruff?

You think the enforcement arm of government is not part of the political landscape?

You think what these oppressive government agencies which have incrementally evolved into paramilitary orgainizations should not be part of political discussion?

I find your comments to be extremely suspect.

Foolish strawman.

It isn’t about what’s a good ides, but about police routinely exceeding their authority, and expressing such in extreme brutality.

No, the point is that none of this would have happened if she'd been situationally aware. She didn't pay attention to the red light. She didn't notice cops were running a trap. She didn't hear the cop when he yelled at her, and she wasn't paying attention to notice someone was running at her until her arm was grabbed. The name for someone that out of touch with reality is 'victim' whether it is of a mugger, a rapist, or a cop. And it is my hope that she will pay attention to her surroundings in the future so that nothing worse happens to her.

As to the rest of the posters on this thread - please proceed with your two minute hate - Big Brother is doing a good job of training you.

Absolutely and utterly beside the point.
As I said: it’s that the response by police was undoubtedly callous, inhumane, and showing a lack of both human empathy/compassion and understanding.

I remember when cops were peace officers. Having dealt with them at emergency scenes over the years it is has become difficult to discern between criminals and some of the thugs the academies are pumping out of late.

Faggot-assed 'roid ragers have no business carrying a badge.

The local cops are being trained and supplied by the feds and will be a part of the solution to the coming “political” problem.

The chief of police says he wouldn’t have been so generous. Apparently he’s very generous when it comes to cops’ physical appearance.

Austin is a liberal/fag/mongrel town. Cops who work there support the Austin lifestyle and Austin politics.

This stuff has always happened all around the country.

No, it didn't.

It started when MADD gained traction.

Some folks won't like that, but it is the truth.

The jail in my tiny little hometown used to be on the 3rd floor of the Court House. Now, it covers 3 square city blocks and is still growing.

The Court House, where presumably "justice is served" still occupies 1/4 of one city block.

Go figure.

For myself, I would never leave home without ID (how would the police know who to call if I died?)

I'm sorry.

When you die, you will be lucky if the police even call the morgue. They really don't engage in that level of "customer service" anymore.

Austin is a nearly perfect city. No crime and perfect safety, well, that is except for the jaywalkers.

And the fact that is practically the only liberal enclave in Texas.
