Word For The Day, Wednesday, February 19, 2014-- forte
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
forte [fawrt, fohrt or for 1, fawr-tey]
noun
1. a person's strong suit, or most highly developed characteristic, talent, or skill; something that one excels in: I don't know what her forte is, but it's not music. Synonyms: talent, skill, excellence, strength, strong point, specialty, proficiency; knack, bent.
2. the stronger part of a sword blade, between the middle and the hilt (opposed to foible ).
3. A musical direction meaning to be performed loudly; the opposite of piano.
Pronunciation note:
In the sense of a person's strong suit ( He draws well, but sculpture is his real forte ), the older and historical pronunciation of forte is the one-syllable [fawrt] or [fohrt] pronounced as the English word fort. The word is derived from the French word fort, meaning strong. A two-syllable pronunciation [fawr-tey] is increasingly heard, especially from younger educated speakers, perhaps owing to confusion with the musical term forte, pronounced in English as [fawr-tey] and in Italian as [fawr-te]. Both the one- and two-syllable pronunciations of forte are now considered standard.
Origin: 171525; < Italian < Latin fortis strong
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The way to keep a dog safe here is to not leave it out unattended, and have it live indoors-considering the coyotes, occasional cougar and wild hogs in the woods, anything else would be temporary and bound to cost your pet’s life eventually-there have actually been dogs dragged out of electrified fences and killed at night. The wildlife is treated with respect and caution by me-I’m just glad we don’t have bears here...
the soother has a very occasional glimmer of hilarity... ; )
well xshub has forbidden me to put the dogs outside in the AM before 7, and after dark, and insists that they be allowed to go in the garage. he will be the one mucking out that stall, so i will try to abide by that.
Thank y’all-I don’t mean to be preachy, even if I do come off that way at times-I’m basically just putting forth the idea that the city or burb way to live with wildlife is not the same as the boonies-here humans have to be more flexible, which is likely why areas like this one have such a turnover of people who come here from cities-I’ve met some who are actually frightened of everything from the fact that there are no streetlights-and we call them light pollution-to the owls hooting on their property...
A bored Husky can destroy a whole room in an hour or less-they need something to do, like most working breed dogs. Husky girl is perfectly happy with her cats for company while I’m at work, but she still howls in happiness when she hears the 4Runner on the driveway, and dances around me playfully for several minutes when I come home. They are bred to bond closely and work with humans.
I could have thrown you under that bus, you know?
There are lots of horses here-the people across the road have two, and I’m sure they’d be glad to provide xshub with instructions for the proper mucking out of a stall...
Can’t the little dogs be taken out with long leashes? That is what I do with Husky girl when I can smell a skunk close, or when there is a commotion that says there is a predator nearby like there was the other night-she doesn’t mind being on leash-especially the ling one...
I think you just did...
Oops-”long” leash...
of course they can be taken out on leashes, and that’s why i have the dogwalker come while we are gone to work, but the reason we have the electric fence, is to allow them to be outside unsupervised and to have the free roam of our half acre. i don’t mind standing out there with them in the summer time, but it’s been so damn cold, i let them out and in. I bribe them to come back in quickly by promising chicken. that generally will have them bounding up from the farthest reach of the yard. but this AM, with the scent of that fox fresh out there, Jules wasn’t coming just for a piece of chicken. the only way i did get him up was to say “c’mon jules we are going in the car” and started walking on the front walk towards the garage. that had him come running to me.
holy crap!!! Didn’t even realize I did that. Nice to see my foot fits nicely in my mouth even in regard to women I haven’t met. I owe ya a beer next time you are in Aurora, SD!
Aurora, Illinois, home to Wayne’s World?
So, it really exists. Unlike Shermer, Illinois.
Jay and Silent Bob do a whole thing about coming to Illinois to go to Shermer because of the John Hughes movies.
Second-largest city in Illinois. Kind of the Second City’s Second City (yeah, I know Chicago hasn’t been the second-biggest US city for a long time now - but hey - we can still make #2 like no one’s damn business).
There are 2 + acres of dog temptation here-I would not think of leaving Husky girl without supervision-Huskies are escape artists when it comes to fences, but even if she were not, there are just too many birds, rabbits, raccoons armadillos, etc because water is so close. If I take her out before dawn or after dusk, the long leash is a must, and we don’t go down near the water without it, ever...
This morning when I went out with her, we walked up on a big gray woodpecker 8 feet away on the trunk of a tree, and she leaped after it before I could reach her collar-it flew away squawking, of course, but that did not stop her from going all around the area looking for it, even after I put the leash that I always bring on her. I said “let’s get chicken”-yeah, that works for me, too-and turned toward the deck several times before she came along willingly. Keeping a bit of leftover chicken is a thing I always do...
synthetic marijuana will kill in a year...dangerous stuff.
The one and only accident I have ever had was just me not judging the slickness of a snowy road and I did a 180 and the rear end of my car hit a stop sign. Minimal damage but I was shaken badly. The next day I could barely walk - I guess I tensed up and my back was in bad shape for awhile. Glad you are ok
In a suburb not too far from me they are having issues with wild hogs! Man alive, they can destroy a yard pretty quickly - and unlike a small fox, they would be horribly scary to find in your yard late at night!
I often think of you telling us deer were nibbling the fall decorations on the fences in your area. I thought that was cute.
