Word For The Day, Wednesday, February 19, 2014-- forte
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
forte [fawrt, fohrt or for 1, fawr-tey]
noun
1. a person's strong suit, or most highly developed characteristic, talent, or skill; something that one excels in: I don't know what her forte is, but it's not music. Synonyms: talent, skill, excellence, strength, strong point, specialty, proficiency; knack, bent.
2. the stronger part of a sword blade, between the middle and the hilt (opposed to foible ).
3. A musical direction meaning to be performed loudly; the opposite of piano.
Pronunciation note:
In the sense of a person's strong suit ( He draws well, but sculpture is his real forte ), the older and historical pronunciation of forte is the one-syllable [fawrt] or [fohrt] pronounced as the English word fort. The word is derived from the French word fort, meaning strong. A two-syllable pronunciation [fawr-tey] is increasingly heard, especially from younger educated speakers, perhaps owing to confusion with the musical term forte, pronounced in English as [fawr-tey] and in Italian as [fawr-te]. Both the one- and two-syllable pronunciations of forte are now considered standard.
Origin: 171525; < Italian < Latin fortis strong
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

I recall the chants at Madison Square Garden when the Islanders came into town, led by their captain, Denis Potvin, who had been accused of domestic abuse.
(To the tune of “Here we go Rangers, here we go.”)
“Beat your wife, Potvin, beat your wife.”
Sounds like they got through it bravely and well.
wifebeating is a russian sport.
Wait--Ryan Seacrest dates girls?
he wore her as a beard for awhile, apparently...
I wish it would melt around here. The main drag through the village is two lanes, but you can’t use both at the same time. The snow piles along the road cause parked cars to cross over the line into one of the lanes and voila! A messy congested downtown. Our mayor must not be driving due to his DWI and not be aware. RME
I thought you meant Brooks Orpik.
Named after Herb Brooks, and now he’s playing Olympic hockey.
That they did, and they even gave a birthday party in the midst of it all!
My son alternated a borrowed generator between the refrigerator/freezer and the heat.
Another local death. This man was once on the same little league team as my son. His brother wrote an obituary and clearly stated he died from his “addictions”. Husband and father of 3. Enough already. Interesting that they put it out there. They asked that anyone struggling with addictions get help now before it’s too late. Good advice.
drugs are a scourge.
RIP russian hockey team.
saw that earlier. it would seem to be common sense, but that is rare these days.
Also, interesting was that he was a local funeral director and the family owns a funeral home. They are having a private service, no public calling hours. Strange.
America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi! |
Yikes! I hope you just bumped and didnt have any lasting injury
That is awful Ti, but glad the family took the opportunity to remind others what can happen! I saw a story about a young woman in a coma from synthetic marajuana but when the president is encouraging smoking it is hard to convince kids that it is sti a drug just as alcohol can be unsafe
Just got my butt wet and a little tenderness on my one thumb and heel of the other hand.
