Blackjack, taser, bear spray, knife.

If he is on the small side and not a fighter high quality bear spray, such as Counter-Assault, may be best.

You can find it online. They make different sizes and varieties, some of which are allowed even in restrictive states.

Did you watch the video? The victim was walking arm in arm with a woman on his left and had his collar turned up, his head down and his hands in the pockets of his coat. He might as well have had "VICTIM" stenciled on his back. The attacker came from behind on the victim's right and punched him in the ear, knocking him to the ground. There was absolutely no warning or time for a defense.

I don't know if it would have helped in this case but I never put my hands in my pockets and always keep my head up and on a bit of a swivel; a legacy from my years in the Army no doubt. A little situational awareness might have helped but there is no way any of your suggestions would have made any difference in this scenario.

Wasp and hornet spray with a range of 20+ feet is widely available.....
