You'd be surprised how many people outside Chicago and Cook County as a whole really hate the fact that "as Chicago goes, so goes the state."
It's changing, little by little. Even with the last Presidential election, there were very few counties that went full on Obama -- Unfortunately a statewide/federal candidate really only has to win three or four counties in the entire state to win.

I have an in-law from Mattoon. I remember visiting and being surprised that the people weren’t much different from where I grew up in NW Florida.

When I lived near Chicago all the suburbs were Republican territory. The first time I voted I had the privilege to cast a ballot for Don Rumsfeld for congress.
