I think Ted Cruz is the modern LBJ--NOT in terms of ideology, but in terms of style, a paradoxical combination of hard-nosed grit and down-home likeability. My impression, in terms of image, is that Rand Paul is confrontational without being particularly likeable, and Mike Lee is likeable without being particularly confrontational, but Cruz is the closest thing to a perfect balance of both--as was Ronald Reagan in his day.

There was nothing likable about Lyndon Johnson.
