The fellow who coined the term “Great Britain” (James I of England/James VI of Scots, of Authorized Version Bible fame) didn’t expand his kingdom’s worldwide reach, though; he was rather anti-colonial. 75 years after his death, British overseas possessions were still rather minimal compared to what the empire would be at its height.

True, but it was world-wide and it did exercise great influence.
