And consider these lyrics, with my notes in red:
I believe I can see the future | (easier when you have none) |
Cause I repeat the same routine | (in a fascist dictatorship, you no longer have choices) |
I think I used to have a purpose
But then again That might have been a dream | (as our memories of Old America dwindle, it will seem like a dream long ago dreamt) |
I think I used to have a voice | (we will soon be in a place where we USED to be able to speak freely) |
Now I never make a sound | (you will not be able to speak freely, lest you be noticed) |
I just do what I've been told | (like a compliant sheep) |
I really don't want them to come around Oh, no | (Them: The IRS, EPA, DHS, FBI, TSA, VIPR, and a dozen other agencies) |
[Chorus:] Every day is exactly the same | (think of the monotony of the Soviet Union) |
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain | (no love except what the state declares is allowable, no pain may be spoken of) |
Every day is exactly the same
I can feel their eyes are watching | (The NSA tracks your every communication. Drones watch your every movement) |
In case I lose myself again | (do not LOSE YOURSELF, citizen. Be compliant to the State) |
Sometimes I think I'm happy here | (we will delude ourselves into accepting the new Communist, Fascist state) |
Sometimes, yet I still pretend
I can't remember how this got started | (I sure can. I've been yelling about this since 1993) |
But I can tell you exactly how it will end | (So can I. Death camps. Summary executions. Repression of political speech. Exile to re-education camps. Planned starvation.) |
Also, look at the millenials of today. Most are entrepreneurial because they have to be. Yet many are anticapitalist. Total disconnect.
Many women buy into the Right wing war on women. Same thing.
American blacks largely blame whites for everything while mocking any black who breaks out of poverty. Again. total disconnect.
Same thing behind the manipulation of the punks. They have all been fed the lie that up is down and since humans are conformist animals, we all fear being the off man out more than almost anything.
A punk in the 70s would have been set upon as hard as the examples above we see today. So they perpetuate their own downfall and convince themselves that all their friends are right and that they have to conform. They think something is wrong with them (selves) to NOT confom...so they do... and one philosophy/group of people reaps the reward of all their hard work.
Left/communists.
I think he splits the difference to be completely honest. With a heaping helping of anarchy/”Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law” thrown in. He seems to adopt whichever ‘thing’ serves his purpose of the moment. Then like magic, yesterday never happened and all his zombies treat each morning as the dawn of a new universe.
Alas, Jello Biafra has recanted. He thinks Jerry Brown is wonderful. I still play the song and sing along.
Nails it.
