I think it helps immeasurably for people have something to aspire to. Of course, nothing can replace faith in God, and many Americans are totally irreligious these days too.

I’ll also qualify my statement by saying that an ideal for people to aspire must be wholesome and worthwhile. When you are proud of your country, when you believe that your country offers the opportunity to honor God freely and do His work and spread His word as you live your life, it gives you something to go on. I’m absolutely certain that people whose ideal is a free-sex, gay-sex, godless society feel emptier than the grand canyon when they lay down at night. Which explains why liberals are so hateful.
