Word For The Day, Tuesday February, 11, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
smithereens [smith-uh-reenz]
-n, pl
Also, "smithers"
small pieces, bits
[ 182030; dial. smithers (< ?) + Hiberno-English -een diminutive suffix (< Irish -ín ) ]
el fregadero [freh-gah-DEHR-oh]

sink
El fregadero estaba lleno de platos sucios.
The sink was full of dirty dishes.
See above. Smile.

Smidgen
a very small quantity of material. Until recently, no one thought a smidgen was an actual unit of measure, but recently kitchen supply stores in the U.S. and other countries have begun selling sets of “minispoons” in which the smallest spoon, labeled “smidgen,” is designed to hold exactly 1/2 pinch or 1/32 teaspoon, which is roughly 0.005 fluid ounce or 0.15 milliliter. The word is a diminutive of “smutch” or “smudge”; it originally meant a small spot.
I’m not seeing the redundancy.
“Smidgen
a very small quantity of material.”
Thanks, I had been led to believe per recent news useage that it was a diminutive quantity approaching infinity to the negative one./*\
Both bands, are from NJ...
No. Donnie Iris is Pittsburgh. Hometown favorite.
I meant that the Smithereens are like Jersey’s version of Donnie Iris. Been around a long time. Had a national hit or two, but never made it big. Still can draw a crowd locally.
I spose, it’s a matter of reading text, to a degree...
Though, I would have expected, a pedant, to make the point that..it was a logical connection..lol.
Lmfao.
You never cease to make me cackle out loud...
Gotcha ...see above.
I needed a good chuckle today.
You’re the chuckle bartender...lol.
Dude, really thanks.
Got about 2 hours sleep.... Thanx for the laff.
Yes, it could have been worded more better. But, c’mon.
After all these years here, how could you NOT know that Donnie Iris was Pittsburgh?
Wait. He’s a Yinzer? /s
where is Carteret? who are the smithereens? i got your point, Soother. sorry i didn’t see any redundancy but maybe if i knew who the smithereens were it would make sense?
He's the Michael Stanley of Pittsburgh.
I was looking for that name to stretch the analogy, but it escaped me. I ended up with Michael Schenker, but he’s German, so that didn’t work.
Thanks!
!!!! Good taste, woman!
Here’s something to notice about them. Every third song has the phrase “hands in my pockets”. Kind of like Steven Tyler spelling out F-I-N-E in a bunch of his songs. They’re preacher’s kids from Wilson County.
i knew their dad was a preacher bc i heard an interview on Sirius Alt nation with them. They said their dad wanted to think the song Temple was religious, so they let him. LOL!
are you a hipster? i have gotten into Hipster music the past year or so and listen to it exclusively.
