Word For The Day, Tuesday February, 11, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
smithereens [smith-uh-reenz]
-n, pl
Also, "smithers"
small pieces, bits

El fregadero estaba lleno de platos sucios.
The sink was full of dirty dishes.
It’s been so long I seriously thought “Vikings” wasn’t coming back - thanks for the good news!!!
I think Hobbes has bad feelings because he never got good at Calvinball
Yep. Calvin has always been too good for me......
I’ve been reading books on the outside just to try to keep up /billmurraystripes
“La Tortura”
(feat. Alejandro Sanz)
[Sanz:]
Ay payita mia, guardate la poesia
Guardate la alegria pa’ti
[Shakira:]
Ay amor me duele tanto
[Sanz:]
Me duele tanto
[Shakira:]
Que te fueras sin decir a dónde
Ay amor fue una tortura...
Perderte
[Sanz:]
Yo sé que no he sido un santo
Pero lo puedo arreglar, amor
[Shakira:]
No sólo de pan vive el hombre
Y no de excusas vivo yo
[Sanz:]
[Sanz:]
Ay amor me duele tanto, me duele tanto
Que no creas más en mis promesas
[Shakira:]
Ay amor
[Sanz:]
Es una tortura
[Shakira:]
Perderte
[Sanz:]
Yo sé que no he sido un santo
Pero lo puedo arreglar, amor
[Shakira:]
No sólo de pan vive el hombre
Y no de excusas vivo yo
[Sanz:]
[Shakira:]
Mejor te guardas todo eso
A otro perro con ese hueso
Y nos decimos adios
[Sanz:]
No te vayas, no te vayas
Oye negrita mira, no te rajes
[Shakira:]
No solo de pan vive el hombre
Y no de excusas vivo yo.
[Sanz:]
[Shakira:]
AAaaay... AAaaay... AAaaay... Ay Ay
Ay todo lo que he hecho por tí
Fue una tortura perderte
Me duele tanto que sea así
Sigue llorando perdón
Yo ya no voy a llorar... por tí
I think I saw that it starts later this month-it they are following the historical writings pertaining to Ragnar, King Aella, who history says was a real jerk, even for that day and time-and others, it should continue to be interesting, but a couple of major characters will come to blows and die for it-they did a good job of the historical last season-the Brits are so very good at that-one reason I like to watch their series/shows about the far bygone times.
another of my faves is Juanes, another Colombiano. a good song, a duet with Nelly Furtado. Colombian spanish is a bit clearer than some of the others. Please analyze and discuss the lyrics ; ) as your spanish homework!
You told me about the video to “La Tortura” last year, which was very good...
I like the phrasing. And I am partial to Colombians!
Though Sanz is a spaniard.
DAmn. Thanks again T5; for whatever reason i had just assumed it wasn’t historically accurate - this makes it all the more enjoyable. And silly of me to assume; I love the Patrick O’Brian early 1800s British Naval novels, and they are historical fiction. I should have at least investigated the possibility that Vikings dealt with some degree of reality.
You know, Vikings were just the meth dealers of the middle ages. ;-)
Sweet mother of Jesus
Hey, I’ll pay you to guard my poesies.
When my daughter was in Panama, she said she could read the signs but not understand the people. Many spoke English, of course, including one who said he would sell her an AK-47 because she was the cutest redhead in Panama City.
Some of my Mexican friends drop the final “s” as well. It’s a very common thing to happen in language-change.
Nuh uh.
Heh.
Thought it might appeal to you LOL!
There is a Columbian novella-Las Munecas dela Mafia-I’ve seen a few times, late on Friday nights, because the language, violence and sex is not prime time stuff and the theme music is almost like a rap number-”Dame Tu Amor”, I think-by a girl group-sort of catchy, but they talk/rap so fast it is hard to get all the words and translate as you go-basically they are asking some guy for everything from clothes and trips to Miami to Jacuzzis, and ending with daddy, I wanted to...
Some of the characters were real people, and the show is following the facts-rather than the romanticized legends of magic and such-as far as they available from stuff like the Anglo Saxon Chronicles and other such publications. If you look it up in a book of British history before you watch, there are plenty of spoilers...
