Word For The Day, Tuesday February, 11, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
smithereens [smith-uh-reenz]
-n, pl
Also, "smithers"
small pieces, bits
[ 182030; dial. smithers (< ?) + Hiberno-English -een diminutive suffix (< Irish -ín ) ]
el fregadero [freh-gah-DEHR-oh]
-n
sink
El fregadero estaba lleno de platos sucios.
The sink was full of dirty dishes.
I recognize that could be interpreted in a funny way, but there is a genuine truth to it. The dying man would get mad if mom spilled the beans, but he’d probably get over it.
Walter White wasn’t happy when the family did an intervention, but he eventually came around to agreeing to get the cancer treatments.
How could anyone hate Calvin & Hobbes?
It’s like an Italian who doesn’tt like pizza.
My dad was not yet 70.
Stage 4 two different places, believe when I say I understand,
And, I know, you don’t want to have this discussion, so feel free to respond if you wish, I will not after this.
Death knows no age, sadly. But bearing the burden alone...toughness, and admirable....
Those qualities are magnified, imho, by lack of age, not enhanced by more of it.
I do get your point.
Everyone...lol
I’m that one person in the U.S. who never watched Breaking Bad so walter white analogies don’t work with me. But I understand what you meant on your previous comment - I think XS’s friend will eventually see that he is being selfish even though he thinks he is not. My Marine made a good comment - that perhaps this guy is not as emotionally secure as he is claiming and it is more his issue with facing death and once his children know he can’t avoid it.
Greatest Player on the Planet.
That is a big wish of many of us, isn’t it? lol
Hate, not the right word...she doesn’t find the humor in it...lol my daughter does....
I keep at least three of those on the table, and Literally lol....
It’s why I’m Hobbes.
The straight man face Watterson uses for him...kills me everytime
“i had resolved to be less offended by Human Nature, but I blew it already”
Yep.
I really feel sorry for your friend - her husband is really asking something of her that she will regret for the rest of her life.
LMAO.
I also like the two in that vein, where in one he says, ‘well when the Sun goes down it’s about the size of a quarter’. And, ‘No we got you at KMart’.
I never watched “Breaking Bad” either-I like to be entertained when I watch TV, and that show looked depressing...
Me too. We started watching The Blacklist this season and were shocked to like it so much! James Spader always seemed to play such creepy characters but he is perfect in this
T, it was anything but...
Every subset and sequence, has him...becoming.... Just in ways you were never lead to expect...
It was Amazing.
It may be considered admirable by some but it is removing the choice from loved ones who may regret not having the chance to deal with it as THEY see fit. It’s a patriarchal I know better than you what’s good for you sort of mindset. My family did not keep secrets about illness or anything else.
You can’t be the one person in the us bc no one in my house has seen it!
Oh good.... I felt so alone. ;^)
I’m sure it is-that stuff just isn’t to my taste-I’ll watch “Vikings” when the new season starts-for the most part, I like series that are about some other era, not this one that I see every day. I do like “Longmire, though, and sci-fi like “Battlestar Galactica” is cool-other than that, it is documentaries about archaeological stuff on History or NatGeo, and an occasional movie...
