If they’re done right, courses like this can be very edifying. Using a popular culture element to explore historical themes is a useful way to integrate the actual course material while keeping it interesting and relevant.
This is like studying linguistics by looking at the “Klingon” language, which as a recent and well-supported artificial language provides a wealth of potential for discussion and information on how any language develops.
