Robinson probably came from a Republican family background, which undoubtedly dated back to the Civil War and Reconstruction era, when newly emancipated blacks identified strongly with the party of Lincoln. Robinson, born weeks after the death of Theodore Roosevelt in 1919, was given the middle name "Roosevelt" in honor of the recently deceased Republican ex-president.
