Scott Walker is a much better “compromise” candidate. He is pro amnesty, which will play good with the establishment, and he is conservative on a lot of other things that will play well with the tea party. With a conservative house and senate, I don’t think an amnesty bill can get through, so it would nullify his establishment cred.
Such a president with a Tea Party controlled Congress could be a good bet. But he is not Next In Line and he has not been lining up support and putting out markers for 12 years already. That is a minimum of what is required to get an edge on the Establishment. That is what Reagan did.
