Was I the only one who visualized a Red flag rising with a pic of Ivan Drago on it when that tune played?
LOL...I sure did. I was pissed when I was younger because they were professional athletes in every sense of the word, and I felt like we were at a distinct disadvantage, especially in sports like hockey.
I liked it better when professionals couldn’t play. There was something different about it. Basketball and hockey in the olympics just doesn’t seem right to me now.
Especially basketball.
The anchors did a piss poor job. For instance, they could have briefly mentioned the song that we know as Stranger in Paradise (Kismet) is originally from Polovtsian Dances (the opera Prince Igor). Or that Peter the Great studied in the Netherlands. The flag of the Netherlands is very similar to that of Russia. Peter the Great studied ship building and navel studies while in Zaandam and Amsterdam. They should have compare St. Petersburg to Amsterdam instead of Venice. But what do you expect form dimwitted and undereducated NBC/Comcast Anchors?
He was overjoyed over having access to toilet paper. His tush was liberated in Sochi.
lol....I noticed that after I posted it.
Did anyone catch the name of the locomotive soundtrack? I thought it was cool.
Interesting that the translation of the Tatu song played when the Russian team entered is “They’re not going to catch us”.
“With as much dignity as he could muster, the old man gathered up the sad remains of his shattered major award.” - A Christmas Story
That’s what I thought of when seeing that pic.
Hahahaha...men and their rockets...
I saw that, and thought...”He is probably happy to be somewhere he can get a square meal, not like his country will soon be.”
They had to built the entire infrastructure. Every venue.
Starting from scratch has to add something to the price. Vancouver had arenas, roads, and ski areas.
Summer, winter, what’s the. difference when it comes to opening ceremony’s? Each host country no matter whether it’s summer or winter highlights their country. Russia didn’t out do China despite spending twice as much.
It reminded me of vintage ELO.
I think part of it is that people are much more familiar with Chinese culture than Russian culture.
How amusing they played “The Saber Dance” during that part.
Immediately reminded me of the movie, “One, Two, Three.”
They guy has a too-soft and mellow tone to his voice. More of an edge is needed in a voice competing with a stadium filled with loudness of every kind. Even turning up my sound didn't help all that much.
I have half a hunch what he was saying wasn't worth anything, anyhow. He sounded bored as hell, also. You'd think he'd try to convey just a teeny bit of excitement to the listeners as he was commenting on the spectacle.
So I just sat back and enjoyed the show which I thought was very ambitious, creative and entertaining.
I think the usual boo-birds here might have a different opinion of the ceremony if they were sitting inside the venue instead of viewing it on a confining screen in their living rooms.

Since I am on the west coast may I ask if anything follows the Parade of Nations — or whatever it’s called — or is that basically the wrap-up?
Am on the west coast too...and fading fast.
Just saw the Chevy ad with two dudes “jumping the broom”...er, getting “married”....
Dear God, make it STOP!!!
The opening ceremony starts after the parade of nations. I thought it was very good.
